Chromatic Bloom
May 1: Entries due via CallForEntry.org
June 6–July 19, 2025: Exhibition dates
Bursting with energy and life, Chromatic Bloom invites artists to explore the power of color in its most vibrant forms. This exhibit celebrates artworks that harness bold palettes, saturated hues, and expressive combinations to ignite the senses. Whether through abstraction, figuration, or symbolic storytelling, we seek works where color takes center stage — radiating intensity and vitality.
In addition to the exhibit, Chromatic Bloom will be the heart of Art Works Downtown's fundraising party, ArtRageous: Chromatic Bloom, on June 21. This fun event expects to bring in 300 guests, eager to explore the art center while supporting our nonprofit. We’re thrilled this exhibit is a part of this celebration and can’t wait to celebrate the power of art and community.

During my 73-year artistic journey, color is a fundamental force in my creative process. Color has served not just as a medium, but as a language through which I communicate emotions, ideas, and stories. Whimsy and playfulness are also key elements. My most recent work is influenced by Mexican folk art, specifically ‘Alebrijes’ (ah-lay-bree-hays), hand-carved and hand-painted wooden animals, people, objects, or fantastical creatures. I’m inspired by their bright colors and intricate patterns, evident in my most recent paintings.

"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder," was first penned by Margaret W. Hungerford in her book, Molly Bawn in 1876. Similar idioms were written into plays by William Shakespeare and have also been attributed to the Bible. Whatever its origin, it suggests that beauty is relative, often perceived differently, and certainly open to interpretation.
I long to connect to something beautiful, hopeful and elevating, especially in today’s world. Sometimes, I have to talk myself into picking up a paintbrush or pen, but once I’m engaged, there seems to be a vibe, a zone, or something bigger than just my voice or vision. When I paint, write, draw or sculpt, there is a chance encounter for an inspirational dance with the creative spirits. Each media seems to complement and enhance the other and hopefully, a bit of beauty emerges.
I paint the figure, landscape, still life, and a combination in oil, watercolor, and mixed media. I use the time-tested techniques of classical realism, but I inject my work with contemporary elements. I also sculpt the figure in clay, then work with a foundry to cast them in Bronze.
I have also completed two books. The Olive Branch and the Fig Tree is a memoir about growing up in Hollywood and being part of a big family involved in that scene. Dreaming Wide Awake is my first volume of poetry, prose vignettes, and related artwork. Dreaming Wide Awake II is in the works as well as a volume of short stories.
Whatever you may see in my selection of work, whether related to something personal, more universal, or both, I hope it brings a hint of beauty and a moment of tranquility.

My weekends have always been spent exploring the neighborhoods of San Francisco and Marin County with my dogs and finding fun coffee spots as a treat at the end of a good urban hike. This painting series takes a journey from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge through Sausalito, Mill Valley, Larkspur and San Rafael, stopping in each neighborhood for a bougie coffee and hopefully a little whip cream for my canine companion.
