Beauty or Truth

an exhibition by Pacific Rim Sculptors

call for entries due: March 14
exhibition dates: April 23–June 11, 2021
Pacific Rim Scluptors may apply through: HERE
Non-PRS sculptors may join the membership then apply to the exhibit: HERE

Members of Pacific Rim Sculptors are encouraged to submit images of their three-dimensional artwork for consideration to be included in the exhibition BEAUTY or TRUTH.

While it is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Merriam Webster defines it as “a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses” and truth as “that which is in accordance with fact or reality.” The Latin phrase Pulchritudo splendor veritatis (beauty is the splendor of truth) is thousands of years old, and suggests that beauty and truth are interrelated. John Keats famously declared “Beauty is truth, truth beauty, -- that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

As truth has been called into question in our current politically-charged era, we are seeking sculptural artworks that reference beauty or truth, ranging from the purely aesthetical to issue-related, or works that address both.

ART WORKS DOWNTOWN  The exhibition will be held at Art Works Downtown’s 1337 Gallery 1337 fromApril 23- June 11, 2021. Art Works Downtown, Marin County's premier non-profit art center, is located on Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael, CA.

COVID 19 Due to Covid-19, the exhibition is unpredictable. If Art Works Downtown’s Gallery 1337 is unable to open for visitation, sculptures will be rotated in the windows as well as provided online. For this reason, the artwork must be smaller than the maximum dimensions to exhibit in the windows. Larger works may exhibit, but will likely not be shown in the gallery’s storefront windows.

VIRTUAL EXHIBITION + PHYSICAL EXHBITION All accepted artworks will be included in the virtual/online exhibition. Only artworks that meet the size and weight limitation criteria will be rotated into the gallery windows for the physical exhibition. (Please see SUBMISSION CRITERIA for details.)

Rotation of artworks featured in the Gallery windows will be at the discretion of the AWD staff. Artists will be notified of when their artwork is rotated into the windows.

If possible, Art Works Downtown will be open. Artists’ receptions will coincide with Second Friday Art Walk on Friday May 14 and Friday June 11, 5-8pm. If AWD is open for in-person visits, accepted artists are expected to attend both receptions. If closed, AWD will provide a limited capacity virtual Artist Symposium for the receptions.

Call for Tips and Tricks

Internet browser:

To ensure credit card security, Call for requires clients to use updated internet browsers (such as Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer). Before you begin using, make sure your browser is up-to-date by going to this website: If you're version is not current make sure to update the software. If you are constrained by hardware limitations (example: old Mac's can't upgrade to new Safari), simply download a different, and current, browser. We recommend Firefox.

Image File format:

JPEG only, dimensions: No smaller than 1200 pixels on the longest side, resolution: 72 ppi/dpi, Size: 5 MB maximum. Make sure your images follow these parameters. If you are uploading an image and the process is taking a long time (longer than 5-10 minutes), your image is probably wrong. Unfortunately the CAFÉ message does not tell you this, it only says that it is loading and make take a while.

Applying for a call:

Uploading images to your “Portfolio” and applying to a call for entries are two different processes. When you apply for an exhibition you will need to choose entries from your Portfolio by checking little boxes next to the images. If you only have three images in your Portfolio, you must check the box for each entry to submit that entry.

Make sure to “PREVIEW” before checking out. Once you click “CHECK OUT” you can NOT change or correct your application.

Checking Out, Payment and Coupon Codes:
When you have looked at your application “PREVIEW” and you see all of your entry images, click “CHECK OUT.” This will begin the payment process. Follow the prompts to pay for your entries. Only credit cards are accepted. If you are an AWD Artist Member you can use your coupon code to receive an entry fee discount. Simply follow the prompts until it asks you for the Coupon Code (you will not see this right away). Then enter the code and proceed.

Philosophical Understanding:

We understand that the online application process can be frustrating and hope you will overcome technology to participate in our exhibitions. While the CAFÉ.org service isn't perfect, it is a very helpful service for AWD and artists alike. As you apply through this process, we encourage you to take a deep breath, think logically (not emotionally) and take your time to thoroughly read the prompts and consider the buttons. If you are digitally challenged, you may want to find someone who is comfortable with the digital realm. Offer them a cup of coffee, fresh baked bread or small payment for their time. Remember to remain patient and calm.
