Lark Calderon-Gomez

San Rafael, CA. April 15, 2015. Lark Calderon-Gomez has been a member of staff at Art Works Downtown for the last four years. Her solo exhibit opens Friday, May 1, 2015 and runs through June 6, 2015 in the Art Works Downtown's Underground Gallery at 1337 Fourth Street, San Rafael, CA 94901. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 8 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Art Works Downtown is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

This unique body of work covers several subjects dear to Calderon-Gomez’ heart. The REBELutionary Women series, a mixed media tribute to a few of her favorite heroines: Angela Davis, Rosa Parks & Frida Kahlo, to name a few, will be on view. In addition, she will be showing several oil paintings from her Julia’s Journeys series. She finds inspiration from her Guatemalan Grandmother, Julia. This is the story of her long immigration to the U.S. back in the 1940’s when Julia was a strong young woman. “I love to tell a story in my work. I’ve always loved a narrative in other peoples artwork, from ParkeHarrison’s 'Architects Brother' series to Banksy’s social observations, I find myself inspired by these talented individuals."

Calderon-Gomez has won several awards for her work with oil painting. She was born and raised in California where her mother, a gifted artist, started teaching her to paint when she was seven. She was twenty years old when she landed her first professional work as an illustrator for a book published by Pearson/Simmel Press. She went on to work in animation for award-winning MetroLight Studios in LA. She worked under award-winning digital effects artist, Mark A. Lassoff. They worked in the 2D division called, MetroCel, where she painted cels on Ren and Stimpy & Beevis and Butthead, respectively. In 1994 Lark and her husband moved back to Northern California where she studied for four years with talented painter, Phyllis Shafer.
